Inside the ‘Tiny Dancer’ Bus Scene in ‘Almost Famous’

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Almost Famous, we recently reunited writer/director Cameron Crowe with stars Kate Hudson (who played “Band Aid” Penny Lane), Billy Crudup (who played Russell Hammond, lead guitarist of the fictional “middle-level band” Stillwater), and Patrick Fugit (who played teen Rolling Stone journalist William Miller).  In the conversation, (co-hosted by James Andrew Miller, whose behind-the-scenes podcast Origins has dedicated its current season to  the making of Almost Famous), Crowe and the actors looked back at the film’s most indelible scene: the sing-along to Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” on Stillwater’s tour bus.

Crowe: We were already running behind a little bit. Sometimes I felt that we were kind of rogue, and we were out there filming and nobody was paying attention to us. But [the studio] kind of woke up to that at one point and they were like, “Rein it in, guys, rein it! This isn’t a lifelong process, rein it in.” Right about that time, we came to the scene that was two lines in the script, which is: “They listen to ‘Tiny Dancer’ on the bus and sing along as Russell realizes the warmth of the community of his band and crew.” And we get there and we start doing it.

It was one of those situations where you just felt it. It was like a physical thing when they started singing along, and you could feel all the relationships all in that one spot. And Billy is there in the front, just kind of way inside of his head, and they’re singing, and you just can’t help but go: “This is the movie! This is everything!”

And I talked to the cinematographer and said, “We gotta cover everybody singing ‘Tiny Dancer.’ And he’s like, “Did you hear what the studio told you recently? This is gonna take two days!” And I’m like, “But you feel it, right? You feel it.” He goes, “I feel it.” And I go, “Is it two days?” He goes, “It’s two days.” I’m going, “We got to do it.” And so we did spend two days chasing that feeling and so much greatness happened out of it. Like Kate, I don’t think “you are home” was in the script, right? Wasn’t that an improv as we were shooting?

Hudson: Yeah. Was that two days? I don’t remember, y’know.

Crowe: Look at Noah Taylor’s face [the actor who played Stillwater’s manager]. The one guy who’s a punk rocker who hates “Tiny Dancer.” You can see two days worth of angst in his eyes as he sang along with that song. He hates Tiny Dancer. But everyone else was just  feeding off the elixir, and we were doing shots traveling from one to the other. And it felt a litle bit like we were on an exotic journey with that short scene. But man, from the first second we started showing that scene to people, it was the beachhead, it was the thing. You know, it’s when you find the point of the whole thing in the corner of the script that you didn’t even realize was quite there.

And the amazing thing was that we committed to that song. And it was the right song. And it wasn’t even that famous of a song. And you got to love Elton Kohn, because as soon as he saw the movie, he was like, “I always loved that song, ‘Tiny Dancer.’  You understand that song ‘Tiny Dancer!” And he started playing it in his show and he’s never stopped playing it. He gives us credit for it. He’s the greatest guy. And everybody came to play in that scene. We did it chronologically, so it was kind of the time in the story that we were also living while making it. So everybody was kind of weary. And I don’t know, my eye always goes to Billy at the front. And then I see [Fugit’s] pain. And then Kate kind of gives him the map for the future. And everybody just felt so grateful that we had the time to do it. We paid the price later.

Crudup: Well, Cameron expressed it perfectly. In this tribe that’s been created with this band where there are rifts and there’s ups and downs and there’s uncertainty about the future, one thing they can all bond over is some  immediate unspoken connection to a piece of music. So there’s a delight in the midst of all that angst.

Now, in the midst of that, they’ve given us all the lyrics for the whole song as I recall, for us to sing. And in addition to not playing guitar, I’m not a singer either. Don’t laugh, Kate! But everybody else on the bus was, and so when we were doing this individual coverage, everyone would sing their beautiful part and then we got to me and I started to sing and I could hear the snickers coming from behind me about my effort. And Cameron just rushes onto the bus bus and he’s like, “I don’t care how it sounds! Just sing with everything you’ve got! I love it. Love that energy. Just give me all of that.”

And so I just let it belt out, and there was an enormous liberation that was mine, maybe even more than Russell’s at that moment. And just being able, for a character who is so guarded in so many of his different relationships to finally have a moment where he could be exuberant in front of them and kind of generous. I remember that being joyful.

Hudson: I just remember being on that bus and having my Polaroid camera and singing. I loved when we were all together. That song, that moment really does sort of personify like what those moments felt like as a whole for me doing the movie.

Fugit: Still, if I go into a bar or a club where there’s a DJ or there’s any kind of a jukebox or anything like that, somebody ends up playing “Tiny Dancer.” And just stares at me. until I notice. [laughs]

Hudson: I actually feel self-conscious every time it comes on.

Crudup: [jokingly] I keep it as my ringtone.

The Old Guard: Will Booker Go Against His Allies?

Based on the comic of the same name, The Old Guard is another movie with immortals. This Netflix original is full of exciting adventures. This action-thriller ends with a slight emotional turn. The ending left its viewers with many questions about one of the members of the group.

The movie is about a team of immortals who have found each other throughout the centuries. The members of the group are Andy, Joe, Nicky, and Booker. They all have unique abilities to heal themselves. A former CIA operative, Copley, hires them to rescue kidnapped children in South Sudan. However, some mercenaries attack them which Copley set up. Meanwhile, they also discover a new immortal, Nile. Now they have to protect her from the rest of the world and also keep their identity a secret.

After Booker’s betrayal, the rest of the team decides his fate. Andy tells him that he will not make any contact with any other member for a full century. She also mentioned that they’d meet again at the same place. We also get to know that Copley is going to declare her dead so her family won’t worry about her more.

The rest of the team visits Copley’s office. There they discover that the former CIA agent has found the reason behind their immortality and healing power. As we already know that Andy is no longer immortal, she discusses how things will happen in the future. Now Copley must remove all the traces of their existence and fight appropriate missions for them.

In the last scene, we see a drunken Booker in Paris. As he arrives at his room, he senses someone’s presence in the room. Although he’s drunk, he is still alert and takes his gun out and finds a mysterious woman inside. We see none other than Quynh inside his room.

Back in the past, we know that Quynh and Andy were the only immortals. Her ability to heal instantly was viewed as witchcraft by other people. She was sentenced to be locked in a tomb in the oceans. Andy spent years looking for her, but her search was fruitless, and ultimately she ends her search.

Of course, the reveal of Quynh, in the end, was shocking. Everyone’s curious to know how and when she managed to escape her underwater prison. As she appears after such a long time, we didn’t get to know about her real emotions towards Andy and the rest of the members. We hope that all these bits and pieces will be answered in The Old Guard.

Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge finally explains that big Hot Priest twist

Fleabag founder and lead star Phoebe Waller-Bridge have shown why popular season 2 character The Priest — The Hot Priest as many lovers have dubbed him — is in a position to break the fourth wall as Fleabag can.

No other personality do so or even notices she does although fleabag often looks in and speaks directly to the camera during the show.

But he not only when The Priest arrives on the scene calls her out on the fact that she appears to be talking to someone but he looks into the camera and yells.

Speaking during The Making of Fleabag, as a part of BAFTA Television: The Sessions, Waller-Bridge revealed that she wanted Fleabag’s relationship with the camera and the audience to be mirrored by The Priest’s connection with God — since both characters constantly feel as though they are being watched by an existence they want to describe themselves to.

“[Fleabag] includes a connection with the camera the entire way through and it was interesting to have someone that has a similar item,” she explained. “He is mirrored case he has God. For her is whether or not she can give up the camera, and she is witnessed from the camera the way through and in the long run, the major issue.

“And he’s seen by God the whole time and is always needing to check to that the entire time. And in the end, he’s the same question, so that I just felt as though it’d be a really good way to mirror each other’s journeys.”

Their journeys do wind up leading them while end his relationship and The Priest chooses to stay in the priesthood as Fleabag chooses to literally wave farewell to the camera and therefore the presence viewing her.

The actress and author, who’s also worked on Killing Eve and the hottest James Bond film No Time To Die, also said that she doesn’t think Fleabag is speaking to anyone in particular when she breaks down the fourth wall but is instead attempting to discover some type of validation.

“I felt like it was symbolic of something I can’t explain… I feel as though it’s that anxiety about being watched and feeling observed and feeling as if you’re not being viewed, does exactly what you are doing count for anything, does it matter?” She explained. “She is always grappling with this need for the viewer to be there, to validate her, and to leave her alone so she can experience things on her own.”

Waller-Bridge has said many times that she is planning a run of this critically-acclaimed comedy-drama, but she has admitted she could be tempted to revisit in life.

“When I’m 50, maybe, when you know there has been a life lived and it is another face looking down the barrel,” she explained.

It’s the perfect re-watch in this quarantine period.

8. Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast is the remake of Disney’s animated film of the same name, released in 1991, It stars Emma Watson and Dan Stevens as Belle and the Beast. Anthony Mackie criticizes Marvel for lack of diversity with its productions

Anthony Mackie has played Falcon seven times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” In an interview for Variety‘s Actors on Actors issue, Mackie talked to Daveed Diggs about the need for more diversity in Disney’s Marvel movies.

The conversation started out with both actors talking about their most recent projects on TV. Diggs is the star of the TNT drama “Snowpiercer.” Mackie appeared in two Netflix TV shows in the last year: The second season of the sci-fi series “Altered Carbon” and in a stand-alone episode of “Black Mirror,” called “Striking Vipers.”

“What are the ways that you find yourself interacting with the moment?” Diggs asked Mackie about Black Lives Matter. “I find a lot of my interactions are just trying to make things better in the gigs I have in front of me — how can I affect different kinds of representation? What is the thing you feel compelled to do? What is your participation in this moment?”

Mackie responded by mentioning the new Marvel TV series for Disney Plus that he’s starring in. “When ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ comes out, I’m the lead,” Mackie said. “When ‘Snowpiercer’ came out, you’re the lead. We have the power and the ability to ask those questions. It really bothered me that I’ve done seven Marvel movies where every producer, every director, every stunt person, every costume designer, every PA, every single person has been white.”

“We’ve had one Black producer; his name was Nate Moore,” Mackie continued. “He produced ‘Black Panther.’ But then when you do ‘Black Panther,’ you have a Black director, Black producer, a Black costume designer, a Black stunt choreographer. And I’m like, that’s more racist than anything else. Because if you only can hire the Black people for the Black movie, are you saying they’re not good enough when you have a mostly white cast?”

Mackie spoke about what changes he’d like to see in hiring practices. “My big push with Marvel is hire the best person for the job,” Mackie said. “Even if it means we’re going to get the best two women, we’re going to get the best two men. Fine. I’m cool with those numbers for the next 10 years. Because it starts to build a new generation of people who can put something on their résumé to get them other jobs. If we’ve got to divvy out as a percentage, divvy it out. And that’s something as leading men that we can go in and push for.”

Netflix reboots ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ docuseries, releases on July 1

Netflix is officially rebooting the hit 1980s TV docuseries Unsolved Mysteries, which tackles not only cold case investigations but also paranormal phenomena.

As reported by IndieWire, Netflix will be releasing the first half dozen episodes worldwide by Wednesday, July 1.

The revived Unsolved Mysteries series will offer a total of 12 episodes, although Netflix is yet to disclose the release dates for the remaining six episodes.

The streaming giant also took the opportunity to release the official trailer of its rebooted version, with the show’s official Twitter page also sharing the news.

Decade-plus run of spooky true stories

Created by John Cosgrove and Terry Dunn Meurer, the original Unsolved Mysteries series debuted back in 1987 on NBC’s network.

The show would go on to complete no less than nine seasons on NBC, before moving to a new home on CBS by 1997.

After a brief hiatus in the late 1990s, the Lifetime network would later bring back the documentary program in 2001.

Its run on Lifetime would end a year later, after the series host, Robert Stack was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002, and later on, died of a heart attack in 2003.

Although Spike TV acquired the show in 2008, with Dennis Farina as host, it would only last until 2010.

Throughout the Stack and Farina eras, Unsolved Mysteries featured episodes depicting all sorts of mysterious and spooky true stories, including missing person cases, conspiracy theories, and even spine-tingling paranormal phenomena such as alien abduction cases, UFO encounters, and even ghost sightings.

New life in streaming

The Unsolved Mysteries series gets another chance to spook audiences around the world, and this time around, it will get a big boost through Netflix’s massive international reach.

Although original creators Cosgrove and Meurer are returning as the showrunners, the new production will be handled by 21 Laps Entertainment, the studio responsible for one of Netflix’s greatest hits ever, Stranger Things.

Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries is expected to remain faithful to the format of the original show. Episodes will feature protagonists who are largely ordinary folks who experience an event that can’t be explained.

Such events may include a mysterious disappearance of a family member, or a mind-boggling encounter with a paranormal phenomenon.

Along with interviews of witnesses, the series will also include insights from experts, reporters, and even police detectives in trying to offer clues or theories about the mysterious cases.

And while the older version of the docuseries had delivered four cases for every episode, Netflix’s version will instead focus on a single mystery for each installment.
