Netflix reboots ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ docuseries, releases on July 1

Netflix is officially rebooting the hit 1980s TV docuseries Unsolved Mysteries, which tackles not only cold case investigations but also paranormal phenomena.

As reported by IndieWire, Netflix will be releasing the first half dozen episodes worldwide by Wednesday, July 1.

The revived Unsolved Mysteries series will offer a total of 12 episodes, although Netflix is yet to disclose the release dates for the remaining six episodes.

The streaming giant also took the opportunity to release the official trailer of its rebooted version, with the show’s official Twitter page also sharing the news.

Decade-plus run of spooky true stories

Created by John Cosgrove and Terry Dunn Meurer, the original Unsolved Mysteries series debuted back in 1987 on NBC’s network.

The show would go on to complete no less than nine seasons on NBC, before moving to a new home on CBS by 1997.

After a brief hiatus in the late 1990s, the Lifetime network would later bring back the documentary program in 2001.

Its run on Lifetime would end a year later, after the series host, Robert Stack was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002, and later on, died of a heart attack in 2003.

Although Spike TV acquired the show in 2008, with Dennis Farina as host, it would only last until 2010.

Throughout the Stack and Farina eras, Unsolved Mysteries featured episodes depicting all sorts of mysterious and spooky true stories, including missing person cases, conspiracy theories, and even spine-tingling paranormal phenomena such as alien abduction cases, UFO encounters, and even ghost sightings.

New life in streaming

The Unsolved Mysteries series gets another chance to spook audiences around the world, and this time around, it will get a big boost through Netflix’s massive international reach.

Although original creators Cosgrove and Meurer are returning as the showrunners, the new production will be handled by 21 Laps Entertainment, the studio responsible for one of Netflix’s greatest hits ever, Stranger Things.

Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries is expected to remain faithful to the format of the original show. Episodes will feature protagonists who are largely ordinary folks who experience an event that can’t be explained.

Such events may include a mysterious disappearance of a family member, or a mind-boggling encounter with a paranormal phenomenon.

Along with interviews of witnesses, the series will also include insights from experts, reporters, and even police detectives in trying to offer clues or theories about the mysterious cases.

And while the older version of the docuseries had delivered four cases for every episode, Netflix’s version will instead focus on a single mystery for each installment.

Netflix gives fans their first look at ‘The Cuphead Show!’

Cuphead-based animated series The Cuphead Show seems to be coming along nicely, as Netflix treats fans to a sneak peek at the upcoming cartoon.

In July 2019, Netflix announced that it would be producing an animated adaptation of the widely popular ultra-difficult platformer Cuphead. Studio MDHR co-founders Chad and Jared Moldenhauer - the minds behind the popular title - were brought on board as Executive Producers to oversee production. Now, nearly a year later, the leading streaming service gave fans their first look at the cartoon in motion with a behind-the-scenes video that also features some of the show’s vocal talent and animators.

Netflix has yet to announce exactly when The Cuphead Show is set to air, though it’s likely to be sometime soon.

A boatload of 1930s nostalgia

It’s no secret that Cuphead was inspired by cartoons from the 1930s, so it doesn’t come as much surprise that the 2D platformer would be making the leap to animated series. It’s a match made in heaven, after all.

Studio heads Chad and Jared Moldenhauer mainly based the game off the classic works of Fleischer and Walt Disney animated studios, which utilized “rubber hose animation”—an animation style where the characters’ limbs resembled rubber hoses, devoid of wrists and elbows.

The Cuphead Show doesn’t seem to mirror the retro 30’s aesthetic quite as closely as its video game inspiration, but it still looks like a lovably zany blast of nostalgia nonetheless.

Cuphead and Mugman’s gambling problems

The plot of the devilishly difficult video game revolved around the titular character Cuphead and his brother Mugman, who both enjoy nothing more than getting themselves into all sorts of mischief in the name of good fun.

One day, despite repeated warnings from their guardian Elder kettle, the duo decide to pay a visit to the Devil’s Casino for a game of craps.

As the brothers find themselves on a lucky streak, the Devil ups the ante by betting the entire fortune of his casino on the brothers’ next roll. In return, if the protagonists lose their next wager, the Devil would claim their souls.

Naturally, Cuphead and Mugman roll snake eyes, and proceed to plead for their lives. The Devil then offers them a deal, which involves the brothers tracking down “Soul Contracts” from escaped debtors by midnight the following day in exchange for their own souls.

It remains unclear whether or not Netflix‘s The Cuphead Show will be sticking closely to its source material, though it has been mentioned that that series would be aimed towards kids, which makes a few plot changes more than likely.

‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ anime series coming to Netflix in 2022

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk, Netflix, and Studio Trigger have revealed that they are developing the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series, which will be released in 2022.

As confirmed by CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a spin-off of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 video game slated for release in November later this year, and as such, the story of the original anime series will take place in the same universe as the highly-anticipated RPG.

CD Projekt Red made the surprise announcement while it was previewing the new gameplay for Cyberpunk 2077 through its Night City Wire live stream last Thursday, while also posting the news on the Cyberpunk website and official Twitter page.

The story

Although Cyberpunk: Edgerunners exists in the same realm as the Cyberpunk game franchise, it will come with its own standalone story.

According to CD Projekt Red’s announcement, the show will consist of a total of ten episodes, with the plot centering around a street kid trying to navigate a futuristic world wherein everybody is obsessed with body modification and technology.

To survive, he decides to become an edgerunner, a cyberpunk mercenary who takes on different jobs, mostly the kinds that are outside the law.

As noted in Netflix’s press release, the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series is a love letter not only to the cyberpunk subgenre of science fiction but also to tales told through the animation storytelling format.

Three-headed collaboration

The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners project sees three entertainment giants joining forces to deliver an original anime series that should only please existing fans of the Cyberpunk franchise, but also anime fans and science fiction aficionados who dig the cyberpunk subgenre.

CD Projekt Red basically needs no introduction, especially after consistently delivering top-level entertainment quality with its The Witcher series of video games for more than a decade now.

After proving its creative chops in the fantasy genre, it is now looking to do the same in the world of cyberpunk.

As the streaming platform partner, Netflix itself is no stranger to the subgenre. Its catalog already includes a generous dose of cyberpunk and science fiction offerings, including originals such as Altered Carbon, Better Than Us, and Love, Death & Robots, just to name a few.

As far as anime titles are concerned, the streaming giant is no slouch either. As a matter of fact, it has a brand new anime series called Brand New Animal debuting this coming June 30. Of course, that’s not to mention the current hit titles it already offers, including favorites such as Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Castlevania, One-Punch Man, and loads of Studio Ghibli movies.

Speaking of anime, Studio Trigger is the anime studio tasked with producing the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series.

Although this animation company is relatively new, it has managed to release a number of certified hits in the past decade, including Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia. The studio is also the one who produced the aforementioned Brand New Animal.

As for the production crew, the director will be Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill), with Masahiko Otsuka (Promare) serving as assistant director. The creative direction will be handled by Hiromi Wakabayashi (Kill la Kill), the character design by Little Witch Academia’s Yoh Yoshinari and Yuto Kaneko, and the script adapted by Promare’s Masahiko Otsuka and Yoshiki Usa. The music will be done by Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill).
