Pokémon Unite announced as new game for Nintendo Switch and mobile phones

If you thought the flurry of Pokémon news was over, think again. Nintendo just dropped a whole new pocket monster game heading to the Nintendo Switch and a mobile phone near you: Pokémon Unite.

In collaboration with Tencent Games and The Pokémon Company, you'll now be battling it out with your little digital pals in epic 5v5 battles that will be cross platform between your Switch and compatible smartphones.

This is huge news for cross-platform fans, as any company willing to share online play between rivals is always good news for us gamers.

During another Nintendo Pokémon Presents livestream, President and CEO of the Pokémon Company, Tsunekazu Ishihara, showed off a long video of the new game and what we can expect.

If you skipped past the epic Pikachu shots and various card game battles, you'll have got to the juicy bit of the show which showed players picking their best Pokémon to play in cooperative battles in a pretty fun-looking MOBA-style battler.

As with other popular games like League of Legends, the map is split into three "lanes" that your Pokémon will be funnelled down to fight. You'll be fighting over the five point-areas on each side of the map to win, similar to defeating towers in other MOBAs.

Your Pokémon then levels up the more it fights, upgrading its abilities and evolving, going so far as to unlock special Ultimate abilities called "Unite Moves" to unleash devastating attacks.

For example, Snorlax builds a wall that blocks damage down your lane, or Blastoise whips out his water cannons to blast the areas surrounding him.

It's interesting that Pokémon is looking to go down the esports route with this new game, but it's a welcome switch up to the age-old games of old.

Pokémon Unite is a free-to-start game for the Nintendo Switch, and iOS and Android devices, and you can play against any device during multiplayer.
